Reflection on assignment 3 and concept development

(For Post-Graduate students I would like you also to submit a 200 word reflection on Assignment 3, and how your themes and concepts have developed through the course.)

Fence was about orders and patterns of intervals at the beginning. It was the relationship of chaos and orders as they were reciprocal to each other. The elements were arranged in certain order and guide the chaotic situation. It was dynamic liked music, since the intervals between patterns carried different rhythms.

In the aspect of architecture, the rhythms and patterns of the intervals controlled the movements between two spaces separated by fence. It was similar to the property of the membranes that the permeability between two spaces was controlled. Unwanted materials were filtered out and hence a nice environment was created behind the membrane. The stronger the membrane, the better the environment would be. As a result, interaction between the spaces on two sides of the membrane decreased and hence, isolation may occur.

The idea was further developed to the built environment. Due to the development of technology, communication became virtual. Permeability of the membranes decreased and people tended to be surrounded by the membrane without direct contact with the real world. They were isolated and felt lonely.

The videos tried to develop a sense of loneliness and depression with the support of the music while the rhythm of the background music helped to drive the narratives.

150 words of Assignment 3

(It is actually the same as the previous post, but I re-posted it for easier reading. :-P)

Fence was about order and patterns of intervals. It is a force to guide chaos to become order. With the increasing demand of “order” in the chaotic society, fence became a membrane that filtered materials. A nice environment was created and people tended to stay inside. Permeability of membrane decreased and communication became virtual. As a result, interaction between people was decreasing.Modeling techniques such as smoke creation, floating bubbles were made under particle system in 3dmax create the expression of virtual communication and isolation. Besides, the rotating planes with images were used to express the sense of loneliness and lost while the explosion of objects helped to create the feeling of chaotic. Moreover, the use of sound track helped to drive the rhythm and the narrative, and hence to reinforce the sense of loneliness, anxiousness, depression and isolation as well as the encouragement to break the membrane.

Idea of the video

The video is about a forecast of the future.

"Isolation" would be the single word that I would like to choose to drive my video. People were isolated from each other as all of the communication were done by computers and virtual connections. Physical contact, communication and movement were no longer necessary. Therefore people would only wander around around the city without having any destinations to reach.

The environment was virtual. Since physical contact, communication and movement were no longer necessary, physical built environment would also become unnecessary.

A slow music was chosen as the background music in order to support the feeling of people wandering around slowly and also the feeling of loneliness.

Inspiring images for assignment 3

10 words developed from the reflection (Assignment 3)

01. Isolation
1. a state of separation between persons or groups
2. a feeling of being disliked and alone
3. the act of isolating something; setting something apart from others
4. (psychiatry) a defense mechanism in which memory of an unacceptable act or impulse is separated from the emotion originally associated with it

02. Permeability
Permeable architects let other things invade them. Permeable architecture is capable of absorbing, but also constantly exporting things.

03. Chaos
It is the indetermination of trajectories which emerges because the system is sensitive to variation, to the incidence of local individual – particular in all senses – actions that end up disturbing and altering the globality.
The contribution of chaos theory is the suggestion of a pseudo – deterministic model leaving room for chance, a dimension for the unpredictable, for randomness.
Its particular movement defies the prefigured and stabilized.

04. Fragment
It is an old word that is substituted for unfinished.

05. Flows
“As in Piranesi’s engravings, the contemporary environment may be understood as an infinite interior of imprecise boundaries, where inhabitants are located in the form of a flow, converted into circulation.
In this context, road infrastructure plays an important role in establishing an order that is not based upon formal criteria but upon abstract bits of information (on a moterway we can arrive at our destination without using geographical parameters, following only a discontinual set of messages).

06. Virtual
Virtual idea shops short of engaging the underlying matrix of physics and materiality that makes both mind and cyberspace possible. This kind of idea limits itself to making isolated conventional forms in conventional space, dressing them in rhetorical conceit, and leaving the world unchanged.

07. Container
“The container is a neutral protective receptacle into which fit multiple shapes and a great diversity of objects arranged in its interior. Its exterior shape – cubical, cylindrical or otherwise- has its own laws for stacking or abutment with other containers, but never that of explaining the object and shape contained therein.” (ARANGUREN, Maria Jose; GONZALEZ GALLEGOS, jose, “Habitar la caja,” unpublished)

08. Privacy
1. the quality of being secluded from the presence or view of others
2. the condition of being concealed or hidden
3. freedom from unauthorized intrusion : state of being let alone and able to keep certain esp. personal matters to oneself

09. Membrane
A membrane is the thin layer of organic, elastic and resistant tissue which separates two cavities or envelops an organ.

10. Inflatable
Inflatable relates to a closed object, made of flexible material, filled with air or with some type of gas or fluid, such that it acquires a bulky, tensioned state.
“An inflatable structure responds to a program. Its architecture is not a static structure which is calculated to resist the biggest possible forces. The inflatable structure is a lean device which relaxes when external or internal forces are modest, and tightens when the forces are fierce. It acts like a muscle.” (OOSTERHUIS, Kas, Programmable Architecture, Milano: I’Arca Edizioni, 2002)

Edited Premise

The patterns of intervals in fences carry the transition between two spaces.

The fence acts as a membrane which separates or envelopes two spaces. Its patterns, sizes of intervals and even materials would control the permeability of physical movement and influences the connection, communication and separation between two spaces.

The degree of privacy, spatial quality and personal experience of the occupants will be affected and controlled. Unwanted materials are filtered and a nice environment is formed within the membrane. The membrane becomes stronger and more important while the permeability is decreasing. Interaction between spaces behind two membranes is hence affected.

Premise

The idea of the patterns of intervals of fences was extracted from my previous assignment and developed architecturally to the idea of the transition between two spaces. The fence acts as a membrane which separates or envelopes two spaces, its patterns, sizes of intervals and even materials would control the permeability of physical movement, visual connection between two spaces, the penetration of light, and hence affect the degree of privacy, spatial quality and personal experience of the occupants.

Assignment 1 submission - 1/5 - 50 words

My feeling about 'fence'

Fence is about orders and patterns of intervals. It forms when things come together in a particular orders and sequences and guide chaotic things into certain orders. It is dynamic and carries different rhythms, like music, depends on the speed of the movements next to it while in music, the rhythms was depends on how the people play the musical instruments.

Assignment 1 submission - 2/5 - The final movie

Please turn on the speaker as I have added music in it, the movie and the sences are working with the rhythm of the music. For detail, please check the storyboard below (in the older post)

The resolution is a bit low in youtube.. so some of the sences can not be seen clearly..i have also uploaded the movie to the submit area in emustore.

Inspiring images part 3

Rhythms, intervals, patterns, orders and sequences. The crest is like the verticle elements of fence, e.g. columns, while the others are like the interval between columns in fences..the fenquency change will also change the outcome pattern.
'Order' in 'Chaos'
Contrast between 'order' and 'chaos', they are reciprocal to eachother, without chaos, there's no demand of order, things in the world are seemed to be chaotics, but in fact they were just arranged in different order, sometimes we can easily tell by looking at it, while sometimes we have to spend a long time to explore it.

Mixture of different rhythms and patterns and colours.
Music is another type of 'order', different way to arrange the notes or the way to play the musical instrument will produce different pattern, hence the music...it consists of different rhythms, depends on how the musicians play the musical instrument, like how people look at the fence when they walk it..

Assignment 1 submission - 5/5 - Inspiring images

Inspiring images Part 1

Here are the inspirating images...most of them were actually posted before, this time I just rearranged them a bit and added some new images..

Fence is consist of ordered elements, the arrangement of the elements can be varied, depends on their purpose. E.g. a wider intervals will give a less control to the movement..
This diagram is about movement, about how the movement were guided and shaped by the dark area, i.e. the fence.
Rem KOOLHAAS, Conference centre, Agadir, 1990.
Rhythm, a faster frequency of the rhythm will give a higher density to the image.
This is another example of rhythm image, it is like we took a picture with a wrongly adjusted shutter..
Pattern, chaotic materials can be arranged in different order and form interest pattern.
